PIE - Who We Are
Professional Inspection Education (PIE) was
formed in 2003 by three partners, each an owner of a separate
successful home inspection business. Over the last several years we
had each researched and noted the need for quality education and
training in the home inspection industry, thus we came
together to provide "Excellence in Training" through
Professional Inspection Education courses and quality Dearborn educational materials.
Our extensive backgrounds include over 40-years
combined industry experience, with nearly 15-years combined
experience in home, multi-family, manufactured housing, and
commercial inspections, college degrees in engineering, business and
science, construction experience from general framing to home design
to log home construction, and corporate building materials
manufacturing from product research and development to building
codes.
Meet the Educators
Douglas Barkee,
founding partner and owner of
Barkee Inspection Services
has been
conducting full home, commercial and exterior specific inspections
since 2001 for clients in the greater Vancouver, Washington and Portland,
Oregon areas. After college, with degrees in Engineering and
Business, Doug contributed 13 years in management, marketing, sales,
and new product development expertise for a major building products
company, traveling throughout the Western states. Showing strong leadership by accomplishing
effective product branding projects, ad campaigns and managing the
product performance department which included inspections of
hundreds of exteriors throughout the West coast, Doug brings his innate knowledge about marketing,
promotion and products to those
just starting out in the home inspection industry. As an
expert in residential building products and as an inspector for proper
installation of those products, Doug shares his ability to spot defects
and offer viable issue-solving solutions. Experienced as an
Instructor and known for his logical, practical approach to
education, Doug presents information in an easy to grasp
manner that promotes reliance on established principles while
encouraging innovative thinking. As a Senior-Certified Member of
the American Institute of Inspectors, and as an officer of NWOCHI
since 2002, Doug encourages involvement and continuous education as
a roadmap to a successful and fulfilling inspection career.
Peter Barten, owner of
Peter Barten Home Inspections has
been performing residential and commercial property inspections since 1999. For 10 years prior to his inspection business, he
worked in residential and commercial construction. Peter is
well acquainted with the challenges that face Northwest built
structures, particularly on the Oregon Coast. Peter is
enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge and effectively
communicating the issues of homes and their systems through custom
created reports and on site consultations with both buyers and real
estate agents and now to students of home inspection. His
attention to detail and unflinching commitment to promoting
awareness of industry standard building practices and professional
conduct aligns with PIE's vision for the future of inspection
education and makes him especially qualified to lead others with
confidence. As a Senior Inspector, current Ethics committee
member, former Vice
President of the American Institute of Inspectors, and founding member of NWOCHI, Peter believes
that the trainers of Professional Inspection Education have
much to offer those entering the exciting field of home inspection.
